Help! A tick!

A tick is an arachnid and also looks like small flat spiders. They feed on the blood of small rodents, birds, but also horses, sheep and deer. A tick bite can cause infections or diseases. Did you know that in the Netherlands an average of 20% of ticks are infected with the Borrelia bacteria? 😱 This bacteria can lead to Lyme disease. And dogs can also get this. So what to do when you see a tick in the fur of your best friend? REMOVE!! What is the best way to do this?
Within 24 hours
Remove the tick as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours. The sooner you remove the tick, the less chance there is that it can transmit diseases.
Use a special tick remover
These are often pointed tongs, which make it easier to remove the tick completely. Or use a tick card and if you have nothing else, tweezers.
Place the pliers or tweezers as close to the skin as possible, over the head of the tick. Do not squeeze the body! Pull it out slowly. It is best if you can remove the tick completely. If a piece remains in the skin that cannot be removed, that is not a big problem. The piece will come out by itself, like a splinter.
Disinfect
Do NOT try to numb the tick by applying alcohol, iodine, soap, oil or other substances! This will only increase the risk of infection. It is important to disinfect the bite wound afterwards with 70% alcohol or iodine.
Keep a close eye on your dog
If your dog shows certain symptoms such as fever, lethargy, pain, stiffness, decreased appetite or if a red ring appears around the bite wound, contact your veterinarian and report that the dog has been bitten by a tick.
What else can you do?
Collar against ticks, fleas and lice
Protect your buddy by putting on a flea collar. The collar ensures that ticks and also fleas and lice are killed immediately. It continuously releases a low dose of imidacloprid and flumethrin. These substances spread over the skin and coat. The dosage is so low that it is completely safe for humans and dogs. Make sure your dog wears the collar all year round. Ticks become active above a temperature of 5 to 10 °C. In our webshop we sell the original Seresto collar from Bayer. Click here to order.
Also take a look at our handy Dogtools collar . This collar is not intended to attach the leash, but specially developed to protect the flea collar from the elements for even better coverage. The flea collar goes in and is therefore between the fur and the collar. And is therefore also free from touching 👋, nice if the dog is the best friend of your child(ren).
The closure is the same as our harnesses, so the band is super quick to put on and take off. Very handy when your dog is going to be combed, washed or trimmed.
And how much cuter does this look than just that boring gray flea collar?! 🤩
Unfortunately, no product can give a 100% guarantee that your dog will never be bitten by a tick, so…
Check, check, check
Give your dog an extended cuddle session after the walk (Stitch loves it ;-). This way you can check the whole body for the presence of a tick. Don't forget to check yourself too!
