Does your dog ever leave his/her food or even curl his/her nose when he/she sees it?
Below are some tricks to help your dog eat better:
Change the type of meat
Sometimes a different flavour can help to make the food interesting again. You don't have to switch to another type of kibble, often the same kibble is offered in different types of meat.
Add an oil or fat supplement
Supplements such as salmon oil, sardine oil or sheep fat contain many vitamins and omega 3. It increases the immune system, gives a healthy and soft coat and stimulates the intestinal flora. In addition, it gives a delicious extra flavor to the meal. (Click here for our range of supplements)
Make it a search game
Provide some interaction by letting the dog search for the food with its nose. See this fun video of Loef ;-) Also a good tip for the greedy eater!
Add a dash of water
By adding some lukewarm (not hot!!) water, a tasty sauce is created. Also a good way to ensure that the dog gets enough or extra water.
Move the food tray
Too much distraction such as noise or crowds can cause the dog to eat less. Place the bowl of food in a space where the dog can eat in peace and without other candidates nearby (our cats love dog biscuits).
What we do not recommend:
- Forcing your dog to eat. If they don't want to eat any more, simply remove the food and give it to them at the next meal;
- Replace food with snacks. A dog can easily skip a few meals. Don't give him too many snacks so that he still gets something. They are only meant as a supplement. You can try giving the food as treats/rewards;
- Feeding your own food. Only feed your dog dog food and preferably not leftovers from your own food. This can only make the problem worse and cause the dog to not like his own food at all.
